Mapping Llandudno – Mass observation through photography with Alan Whitfield

1)    What will participants be doing?
Mass-Observation was a United Kingdom social research organisation founded in 1937.It aimed to record everyday life in Britain through a panel of around 500 volunteer observers who either  took photographs ,maintained diaries or replied to open-ended questionnaires (known as directives). They would anonymously record and archive conversations and behaviour as well as the architecture and infrastructure of a place.
Students will meet artist Alan Whitfield at FreeHaus and do a tour of the building, followed by some photography and observation skill building sessions/activities indoors.Alan will talk about some of the methods used by the original Mass Observation Organisation, including the mass observation wheel, which visually sets out aspects of the town to observe and archive.
After this, we will go into Llandudno town centre to do the mass observation photography project.

2) What materials will be used?
Please bring a camera or phone…anything you can capture images with!
Alongside this, Alan will  create a mass observation wheel for you to work with.

3) What “product” will you end up with?
Alan is creating a giant immersive installation map of Llandudno for his exhibition during LLawn04. Your images will form an integral part of this installation!
